Article : In our Hands! :)

Arsenal's victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford today leaves Pompey needing only to win all their remaining games to clinch the Premiership title!

A bit OTT in mid-September? Perhaps. But lets be fair, the situation hasn't occurred for more than 50 years...

Arsenal's 1-0 win at Manchester United ensured Pompey kept hold of top spot in the Premiership following the Blues' own similar success at Charlton yesterday.

And this is the real, 24-carat McCoy, for Pompey are top of the league in a win-all-the-rest-of-our-games-and-we'll-be-Champions kind of way: something fans of the club haven't known since the early 1950s.

Three times the club have briefly flirted with top spot - for a couple of hours on the first day of the 2003-04 season; then for 24 hours at the end of August 2003 after Teddy Sheringham's penalty completed his hat-trick and a 4-0 win to put Pompey at the pinnacle of the English game. The opening day 3-0 win over Blackburn also put Pompey in pole this season for a day, until Manchester United thumped Fulham 5-1 in their own opener.

But this is different - and so I am sure fans of other clubs will forgive us for making hay while the sun shines.
Hard on Pompey's heels are Chelsea, who joined Manchester United a point behind the leaders, with their own 1-0 win over Liverpool thanks to Didier Drogba's spectacular goal.

Pompey's fifth clean sheet in a row leaves them on course to equal the Premiership record from the start of the season, provided they can do likewise against Bolton at Fratton Park on Monday week.

Last season Chelsea kept six consecutive shut outs from the start of the campaign.

Holding out against Wanderers would also equal the post-war club record, achieved in September 1978, when Pompey went six fourth division games without conceding a goal.
However, the team still have some way to go towards breaking the all-time club record set from the start of the 1922-1923 season when Division Three (South) Pompey went eight games from the start of the season without letting a goal in.
