A tricky start without doubt, but last season Pompey picked up seven points from the five corresponding fixtures, so it is hardly time for wrist-slashing just yet!
Boxing Day sees the return fixture with Arsenal, while New Year’s Day features the shortest trip of the season to Reading. The season ends with a home game with Fulham.
Most games are scheduled for weekends – although no doubt the TV schedulers will shift some to Monday nights - but fans will be unhappy at the prospect of having to travel to Manchester United in midweek at the end of January.
